Initial Call to Action

In light of the recent hurricanes, VectorStars has begun gathering experts in the vector control space and across a wide range of disciplines to help troubleshoot and support our friends in the Caribbean.

Organized by Grey Frandsen, the initial call focused on assembling a group that can support either with technical expertise and/or guidance and friendship in support of CARPHA as we are called to support action in the coming months and years.

Call Highlights

+ In this initial call, we heard from regional players on the ground and in the areas directly affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The general consensus being that, while parts of the Caribbean have been spared from the destruction, the vast majority of the islands have suffered significant damage.

+ Most countries, including those not necessarily affected by the full brunt of the storm, are now experiencing or expecting to experience high levels of mosquitos and there is great concern about vector-born disease, especially Zika, dengue, and even malaria.

+ We have a variety of partners ready to support CARPHA through technical expertise, solutions and systems support, digital assessments, and others.

+ Following this, and a next emergency call to be held on Wednesday September 13 (time TBD), working groups will be formed to integrate with the various agencies and organizations deployed locally.
